A cardan coupling \u2014 also referred to as a universal joint coupling, Hooke’s joint, or simply a PTO shaft \u2014 is a mechanical device that transmits rotary motion between two shafts that are not perfectly aligned. The core of every cardan coupling is the cross-and-yoke assembly: a hardened steel cross (also called a spider) whose four trunnions engage two perpendicular yokes.
